💡

Rule reminder

In formal academic Italian, certain cohesion devices are preferred over their colloquial equivalents: (1) 'essa/esso/essi/esse' over 'lui/lei/loro' as subject pronouns; (2) 'tale/tali' over 'questo/questi' as demonstratives; (3) 'il suddetto / la suddetta / i suddetti' (the aforementioned) in legal/administrative texts; (4) 'il medesimo / la medesima' (the same) in formal prose; (5) 'quest'ultimo/quest'ultima' (the latter) for pairs. Choosing the right register for the cohesion device is part of B2+ writing competence.
