Modal Clauses — Proposizioni Modali·Modal Clauses in Literary Italian
💡

Rule reminder

In literary Italian, modal clauses are richer and more varied than in everyday speech. 'Come se' and 'quasi che' with congiuntivo trapassato appear frequently to create dramatic, hypothetical, or introspective comparisons. The past gerund is common in narration. 'Senza che' + congiuntivo is stylistically preferred over 'senza' + infinitive in elevated prose.
