Rule reminder
Italian contrast connectives have subtle differences. 'Tuttavia' (however) is formal and introduces a moderate counterpoint. 'Però' (but/however) is less formal and can appear mid-sentence. 'Ciononostante' (despite this) is more emphatic — the obstacle has been stated clearly. 'Nondimeno' (nonetheless) is literary/formal. 'D'altro canto' (on the other hand) introduces a balanced alternative view. 'Al contrario' (on the contrary) refutes the previous statement completely. 'Invece' (instead/whereas) marks a simple opposition.
