Synonyms and Lexical Nuances — Sinonimi e Sfumature·Exercise 49 — Intensity gradations: from weak to strong
💡

Rule reminder

Italian synonyms often differ in intensity rather than meaning. For liking: 'apprezzare' (to appreciate) < 'piacere' (to like) < 'amare' (to love) < 'adorare' (to adore). For disliking: 'non piacere' < 'dispiacere' < 'infastidire' (to irritate) < 'disturbare' < 'dare fastidio' < 'esasperare' (to exasperate). For anger: 'essere scontento' < 'essere seccato' < 'essere arrabbiato' < 'essere furioso' < 'essere fuori di sé'. Matching the right intensity avoids under- or overstating.
