Rule reminder

In standard È...che clefts, 'che' is used for all focused elements. However, 'chi' appears in fixed constructions where it acts as a free relative pronoun meaning 'the one who' (chi = colui che). Example: È chi lavora di più che merita di più. 'Chi' is NOT a simple substitute for 'che' with person-subjects — 'È Marco che ha chiamato' is correct, not 'È Marco chi ha chiamato'.
