Rule reminder
In Italian academic and scientific writing, impersonal constructions with 'si' are standard: 'si osserva che' (it is observed that), 'si nota che' (it is noted that), 'si dimostra che' (it is demonstrated that), 'si conclude che' (it is concluded that), 'si ipotizza che' (it is hypothesised that), 'si riscontra che' (it is found that), 'si assume che' (it is assumed that), 'si afferma che' (it is stated that). After 'si dimostra che' and 'si osserva che' — indicative (stating facts). After 'si ipotizza che' and 'si suppone che' — subjunctive (expressing hypothesis).
