Rule reminder

Italian has several verbs covering the semantic field of 'sentire': 'udire' (to hear — formal/literary, purely auditory), 'ascoltare' (to listen to — active, deliberate), 'percepire' (to perceive — also taste, touch, smell; slightly formal), 'avvertire' (to feel/sense, especially physical or abstract signals), 'annusare' (to smell/sniff, olfactory). 'Sentire' itself is versatile (hear, feel, smell) but choosing a more specific synonym marks a higher register.
