Concessive Clauses — Proposizioni Concessive·Concessive vs. Conditional: Anche se + Indicative vs. Subjunctive
💡

Rule reminder

With 'anche se': (1) + indicativo = concession of a real or probable fact: 'Anche se piove, usciamo' (even though it is raining, we go out). (2) + congiuntivo imperfetto/trapassato = hypothetical or counterfactual concession: 'Anche se piovesse, usciremmo' (even if it were raining, we would go out — implying it is not raining). This distinction also applies to other concessive connectives, but is most transparent with 'anche se' because it can take either mood.
