Discourse Connectives — Connettivi Discorsivi·Connectives for Contrast: Mentre, D'altro canto, Al contrario
💡

Rule reminder

Italian has several contrast connectives with different nuances. Mentre (while/whereas) contrasts two simultaneous or parallel situations. D'altro canto (on the other hand) presents a different angle on the same subject. Al contrario (on the contrary) refutes or inverts a previous statement. Invece (instead/on the other hand) implies an unexpected or substitutive contrast.
