Word of the Day: strafottente — the art of aggressive indifference

Strafottente comes from strafottere — the prefix stra- (beyond, excessively) combined with fottere, a vulgar verb (cognate with English 'to f---'). Strafottere therefore means 'to not give a damn in the extreme' — to be so beyond caring that the indifference itself becomes offensive. The word is part of a rich Italian tradition of using the prefix stra- to intensify: strabello (extremely beautiful), stravecchio (extremely old), strapieno (absolutely full). But strafottente uses the intensification ironically — the excess is an excess of not-giving. The word appears in Italian literature and cinema from the early 20th century, often applied to characters who challenge authority through sheer indifference: the rebel, the delinquent, the aristocrat who cannot be bothered to explain himself. In contemporary Italian, strafottente is used in political commentary to describe politicians or public figures who respond to criticism with contemptuous dismissal — a style that some voters find offensive and others find attractive.

Strafottente occupies a complex position in Italian culture. Italy's long experience with powerful institutions — the Church, aristocratic families, foreign rulers, bureaucracy — has produced a counter-culture of strafottenza as resistance. Some of the most beloved figures of Italian popular culture, from Totò to Alberto Sordi's iconic characters, combine strafottenza with comic genius: they refuse to be impressed by authority, flout convention, and survive by aggressive indifference to rules designed to keep them down. In this reading, strafottenza is not simply arrogance but a survival strategy — the posture of someone who has decided that the official game is rigged and will not play by its rules. This ambivalence means strafottente can be used as criticism but also, in certain contexts, with grudging admiration.
