The pausa caffè as a cultural institution mirrors the history of coffee in Italy. Coffee arrived in Venice from the Ottoman Empire around 1570, and the first Italian coffee house opened in Venice in 1683. By the 18th century, the caffè had become a centre of Enlightenment debate — Voltaire visited Florentine caffès, and the famous Caffè Florian in Venice (opened 1720) is still serving today. The tradition of the morning espresso break in the workplace crystallised in the 20th century, becoming an informal right for Italian workers. The espresso machine itself — a specifically Italian invention, perfected by Angelo Moriondo in 1884 — made the quick, standing coffee break physically possible. The pausa caffè is therefore not just a habit but the product of centuries of Italian coffee culture.

The pausa caffè is not just about caffeine — it is about human connection in the workplace. Italian management culture has long understood that the real business of the day happens at the bar, not at the desk. Decisions are floated, complaints aired, and relationships maintained over 90-second espressos at the standing counter. The Italian espresso itself is designed for this: drunk standing, quickly, socially — not at a desk with a lid on a takeaway cup. Companies that eliminate the pausa caffè in the name of efficiency often find morale dropping precipitously. Some Italian employment contracts historically included the pausa caffè as a guaranteed break, recognising its importance to worker wellbeing.
